Extensions in and around Liverpool
Site visits are available across Liverpool (L1, L2, L3, L5, L69, L70). The same team covers Birkenhead (2 miles), Wallasey (4 miles), Litherland (4 miles), Bootle (4 miles), all within easy reach.
Just over the Cheshire border, Ellesmere Port is about 10 miles away. Across the North West, terraced houses with small rear yards suit compact rear and side return extensions, while suburban semis have room for more.
Who a porch extension suits
- Front doors that open straight into a living room
- Busy hallways with no storage
- Homes wanting better kerb appeal
Proportion matters on a porch more than on any other extension, because it is at the front. We match the roof pitch and brick and keep the front door in proportion with the house windows.
Planning rules that apply in Liverpool
In England a porch is usually permitted development if its ground floor area is no more than 3 m² measured externally, no part is over 3 m high, and no part is within 2 m of a boundary next to a road.
Homes in conservation areas, national parks, National Landscapes (formerly AONBs), the Broads and World Heritage Sites have tighter rules, so we always check the property's status and planning history before design starts.
If the work involves a shared wall, building on the boundary, or digging foundations within 3 m (sometimes 6 m) of a neighbour's building, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 applies and notice must be served before work starts: two months for work to a party wall, one month for new walls on the boundary and for excavations.
Building regulations approval is separate from planning. In England you can use the council's building control team or a registered building control approver; a full plans application gets the drawings checked before work starts, and the inspector signs the work off with a completion certificate.
Applications are decided by the local planning authority (your district, borough or unitary council).

Will my neighbours in Liverpool be involved?
If a planning application or prior approval is needed, the council notifies neighbours. If the work is on or near a shared boundary, party wall notices may also be needed.

Yes. Almost every extension needs it, whatever the planning route. We prepare the drawings and book the inspections.
How long does a porch extension take to build in Liverpool?
On site, typically 2 to 4 weeks once approvals are in place. Before that, allow 2–8 weeks design and approvals.
Do I need planning permission for a porch?
